Yabby Lake Chardonnay 2005 Delicious, balanced chardonnay, reminding of white Burgundy
Tasting
Notes
August 2011
Yabby Lake is located on the Mornington Peninsula
which is part of the greater Melbourne metropolitan region just south of Melbourne. The Mornington Peninsula is a cool climate area known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Established
in 1998 by the Kirby family, Yabby Lake is now the largest single estate project in the Mornington Peninsula with 100 acres planted
to vines. Pinot Noir leads the way, accounting for over 60% of the estates plantings, with Chardonnay coming in a distant second,
followed up with other cool climate varietals.
The 2005 Yabby Lake chardonnay is a true Burgundy knockoff reminding of a well made Puligny Montrachet. This was given lees stirring and 100% new French oak for 12 months, but
no malo-lactic fermentation. The end
result is a wine with an engaging lift
to the aromatics, toasty, with a slight
nut tone reminding of cashew, and a
palate that although offering richness
and some roundness, still possesses
good drive and fruit purity with notes of peach, melon, citrus and some nuttiness to the mineral etched fruit on the finish. This is
classy and even with some bottle age will still drink beautifully over
the next couple of years.
