Located in the center of the Cape Winelands, on the eastern slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, between the Rupert de Rothschild and Plaisir de Merle estates, Vrede en Lust is classified under the Wine of Origin Ward Simonsberg-Paarl, as part of the Paarl Wine Region. Established in 1688 by Jacques de Savoye of Huguenot origin, Vrede en Lust is now under the ownership of the Buys family, who bought the property in 1996, becoming its 17th owner. A family owned and run wine business, the Buys upon purchasing the farm, began the restoration of a number of historical buildings and replanting the vineyards to noble grape cultivars. Vrede en Lust which translates to ‘Peace and Eagerness’ is now considered a modern wine farm built on a 320 year old foundation. With the upgrades to the property Vrede en Lust is now recognized as one of the Cape’s best overall tourist destinations.
You will note that the name used for the cultivar/varietal is Syrah and not Shiraz. The reasoning was to differentiate away from the more boisterous New World style, towards an Old World, more elegant style, reflective in the balance between spice and fruit that the estate strives for. Made in a Rhone style the nose has some interesting spice notes, a bit of white pepper as well as a whiff of violets and some earthy, stalkiness to the dark plum fruit aromatically. Medium fuller bodied this has riper, powdery tannins that play nicely off of the dark cherry and dark plum fruit. This has a core of sweet dark stone fruit touched up with some savory notes that gives it charm. Drinking beautifully as we speak this should give a lot of pleasure over the next couple of years. |
