Sir Edmund James Palmer Norton, an English engineer In 1865, on the frontier between Germany and Denmark, Sir Edmund James Palmer Norton was born. He was of English ancestry, and would later become one of the pioneers of Argentine viniculture. Raised in his native England, he was graduated an engineer. Soon his services were requested by Argentina to build the railway connecting Mendoza and Chile. Upon its completion, he moved to Bahía Blanca and later, in 1889, returned to settle in the province of Mendoza. Although his task initially was designing railway bridges, his entrepreneurial spirit soon drove him to search for other opportunities. Thus, in 1895 he founded the very first winery in the area, located to the south of the Mendoza River in the district of Perdriel, in the department of Luján de Cuyo. Later, he imported vines from France and devoted himself to his newfound love of viniculture. Sir Edmund Norton adopted Argentina's Mendoza province as his homeland, married Juana Suárez, and had several children, some of whom continued the family business. In 1944, Sir Norton passed away. It is a fitting testament to his genius and personality that he is warmly remembered even now as a gentleman, and for his devotion to making his wines the best they could be.
