Ross Estate Shiraz 2005

91 pts Robert Parker, Jr. #173 - nicely concealed tannins, layers of flavor, and a long, pure finish.

Tasting Notes

The wine is an excellent example of Barossa Shiraz in an elegant style. The colour is an intense dark crimson. It is an elegant, well balanced wine displaying a smokey, vanillan nose with red currant and rasberry fruit characters which also follow onto the palate. Silky tannins compliment the extended fruit finish.

Food Accompaniments

Steak, Kangaroo, Cheese platter, Luscious cuts of red meat and roasts.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

91 pts Robert Parker, Jr. #173
Purple/black in color, it delivers a nose filled with toasty, smoky, black raspberry, and blackberry aromas. Medium-bodied and elegant for a Barossa Shiraz, it has nicely concealed tannins, layers of flavor, and a long, pure finish. Give it 2-3 years to evolve and drink it through 2020.

90 pts. Wine Spectator. January 15, 2007.
So chocolaty that it's fair to ask if chocolate coated barrels were used, but this is also rich and redolent of blackberry, dark plum and peppery spices. Tannins are present but well-integrated, and this finishes with a fine balance. Best from 2008 through 2015.

88 pts Robert Parker, Jr. Wine Advocate Issue # 167
The serious, muscular, structured 2005 Shiraz displays more wood notes than the Lights Out, as well as a leaner personality (because of its tannin), this more reserved effort can be drunk over the next 5-6 years.

88 pts Stephen Tanzer 2007
Inky ruby. Powerful, spice-accented cherry and cassis aromas are deepened by chocolate and candied licorice, along with an exotic vanilla overlay. Cherry-vanilla and bitter chocolate flavors are weighty and round, with supple tannins and low acidity. Gains focus and energy on the finish, which offers good cling.

Winemaker Notes

THE GRAPES Batched for this wine were carefully selected from our vineyards in Lyndoch and Tanunda. THE 2005 VINTAGE provided good growing conditions, ensuring full maturity of all varieties of grapes in a warm dry season. Harvest took place in late March 2005. The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness, in order to fully display their individual characteristics. FERMENTATION took place in open-fermenters and the wine was kept on skins and pumped over daily. The free-run and pressings were immediately blended together and transferred into 30% new and 70% old American hogsheads to complete fermentation. The wine was racked and then returned to barrel for a further 12 months maturation.
THE WINE is an excellent example of Barossa Shiraz in an elegant style. The colour is an intense dark crimson with a smokey vanillan nose and lifted fruit characters of raspberry and red currant. The red fruit carries through onto the palate with an extended fruit finish of satsuma plum and silky tannins. BEST DRINKING Now to 2015
