Robert Oatley Tempranillo 2009 out of King Valley, Victoria
Tasting
Notes
January 2011
Robert Oatley was one of the main forces behind the Aussie wine surge with his Rosemount label when the Aussie wine invasion was in its infancy in the US market. After selling Rosemount a few years back he has gotten back into the business with his appropriately named Robert Oatley label.
Sourcing grapes from vineyards located in lesser known regions across Australia’s vast reaches, Robert Oatley has started to introduce interesting wines and varietals that are out of norm for Australia in terms of its wine exports. The 2009 Tempranillo out of Victoria’s King Valley is a testament to his vision and passion with its spicy red berry, cherry fruit and silky, supple frame. The King Valley seems to be a natural fit for this highly respected Spanish varietal and under the guidance of the Robert Oatley team this shows that Australia is on the right track and is capable of working outside the box that it has been pigeonholed in by most mainstream consumers.

A nicely balanced rendition of Tempranillo, with dark, berry-scented fruit and a veneer of vanilla and toasty oak. Easy, with supple tannins that don't get in the way of present enjoyment.

Firm, succulent and appealing for its spicy dark berry flavors, riding easily over a bed of fine tannins. Drink now through 2013.
