Ridgeback Viognier 2007

Tasting Notes

May 2010 - Named after the famous Rhodesian Ridgeback, the only registered breed indigenous to South Africa, Ridgeback Wines was established in 1997 and produced its first estate bottled wine in 2001. Sitting amidst the rugged Paarl Mountains of Northern Agter Paarl on 65 hectares of land, Ridgeback has thirty five hectares planted to vines, producing 16,000 cases of wine under its own label, of which 70% is red. The farm has a made a strong commitment to maintaining the natural flora of the region, the Proteas and fynbos which are unique to this part of the world, as well as promoting the Ridgeback through various organizations. The emphasis of cultivars being grown on the farm is based on Bordeaux and Rhone varietals. Both styles have shown promising results, in fact the first release of its Shiraz, from the 2001 vintage, received the prestigious 5 star rating from the John Platter Wine Guide, which helped put the label on everyone’s radar screen. Since that first launch, the wines from the Ridgeback have won numerous awards for both its Bordeaux and Rhone style wines, internationally and in its native market. The 2007 Ridgeback Viognier offers up the classic features of the varietal with notes of ripe stone fruits, peach and apricot along with a toasty backdrop to the wines aromatics. Medium to full bodied, and texturally broad across the mid palate, this has noted richness as well as sweetness with enough carrying acidity to keep it focused. Round and slightly creamy, the toasty oak adds some interesting nuance to the wines warmer finish. This is drinking spot on and should be enjoyed over the next 6-12 months.
