The Heartbreak Grape, as it is sometimes know, holds a special place in the wine world. It is native to the Burgundy region of France, where it produces some of the great wines of the world. Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and soils that drain well, and requires a lot of nurturing and attention in the vineyard to express itself fully. There are many clones of Pinot Noir, and the grape has a high tendency to genetically mutate (Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Meunier are all closely related to Pinot Noir). Due to its specific requirements, there are only a few places in the world that can make Pinot Noir really well, and most people think of Burgundy where it is elegant, subtle and beautiful. Oregon and cooler parts of California make some excellent versions that are fruitier styles. In the Southern Hemisphere some excellent Pinots are being made in New Zealand, the Mornington Peninsula in Australia, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley of South Africa, and the Casablanca region of Chile.
