-Pinotage is the result of a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsault varieties. It was created in South Africa in 1925 by Professor A I Peroldt at Stellenbosch University. Pinot Noir makes the classic highly-prized wines of Burgundy , and Cinsault is a prolific red cropper that makes undistinguished wines in the south of France. Pinot Noir is very difficult to successfully grow whereas Cinsault is sturdy and resistant to vine ailments. In 1991, Kanonkop's winemaker Beyers Truter entered his Pinotages at the International Wine and Spirit Competition These so impressed the judges that he was presented with the "Winemaker of the Year" award - becoming the first South African to win. Pinotage gained international attention, and wine drinkers keen to enjoy a new taste clamoured for the unique wine,
The most important reason to drink Pinotage is because it is enjoyable. Another is that it is red.
Somebody once said that the first duty of wine is to be red. That it has health benefits when consumed
in moderation is a bonus. Study after study has shown that the moderate consumption of red wine could be beneficial to your health.
Red wine contains high concentrations of resveratol, an anti-oxidant that shows abilities to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.
And why Pinotage rather than other red wines? Because Pinotage is different, because Pinotage is uniquely South African, because Pinotage allows you
to strike a blow against the tyranny of the conventional.
