NITIDA CELLARS Nitida Cellars is the newest and smallest wine-producer in the Durbanville area. In August 1990, Bernard and Peta Veller bought "Maasspruit Farm" a tiny sheep farm in the middle of the beautiful Durbanville Wine valley "Kloof".
But 37 Hectares of Clovelly Hutton soils on a southern slope, perfect temperature conditions, cool morning and evening mists and light Atlantic Ocean breezes in an area known to produce grapes for many of the top wines in the country was more than any wine lover could resist. After extensive testing and analysis they began planting vineyards in 1992.
With 12 hectares of prime soils under vine, the shed became a cellar full of stainless steel equipment, and the family expanded to 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 pigs an owl and a bronze baboon...all that was needed was a name for the wine.
"We tried to combine a bit of history with our hopes for the future. In the past Protea Nitida grew wild as part of the Renosterveld on the farm. In the future we hope our wines will live up to the name's Latin roots "Nitidus" meaning bright, shiny, healthy, refined and cultured."
So far they have certainly been successful. Their first release, the 1995 Sauvignon Blanc, won a double gold at the 1996 Veritas awards. They have never looked back, with each of the wines in the current range having recently received acclaim.
