Based at the foot of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains just outside of Franschhoek, Lynx is a boutique operation that produces around 2,500 cases a year, of which close to 85% is red. The smallest wine estate in the Franscshhoek, Lynx’ first bottling took place in 2003 and all fruit is estate grown. Under the guidance of owner/winemaker Dieter Sellmeyer, Lynx has established a track record for its red wines that are fruit driven with an elegant tannin structure that makes the wines accessible at an early age as well as having excellent food affinity.
The 2008 Lynx Cabernet Sauvignon has that lovely cool climate leafiness to the fruit that we find so attractive for Cabernet. Here the fruit shows exceptional, noted purity, with black currant fruit playing perfectly off against the wine’s herbal background without any green, angular edges, just an ever so slight suggestion of cool menthol adding nuance. The end result is a wine with exceptional fruit precision and clarity. Not big in body, this is medium to medium fuller in body, with almost powdery tannins, giving just the right amount of focusing grip on the finish. The fruit is so bright and vibrant that what the wine lacks for in weight and heft the fruit makes up for. This will have a lot of fans for all the right reasons. Simply delicious, this may not be something to age for too long but in the short term this will make a lot of friends. |

87 pts Wine Enthusiast Magazine (LB) 3/1/2011 Surprisingly light and vibrant smelling with aromas of raspberry, red plum skin and iris. A touch of pepper and cocoa unfold on the finish. Approachable and a good choice for a beef pot-luck dinner with friends. Drink now. |
Winemaker Notes |
A full-bodied leathery wine with forest fruit and cassis on the nose following through to a rich palate of dark fruit and delicate spice. Firm, smooth tannins, seamless wood integration and good structure. |
