Cono sur has come out of nowhere over the last 18 months to position itself as one of the hot new wineries in our market. They make a range of wines that fit every price point but what may be their most intriguing wine is their Sustainable agriculture (Organic) Pinot Noir. The packaging is slick and the quality of fruit in the bottle delivers way above its price point.
The 2007 has just been released into our market and it is just now starting to show glimpse of its potential. With a few months more of bottle age (this should develop nicely over the next couple of years) this will really blossom into a beauty. Right now the wine has a vivid ruby red color that shows a very youthful and lively visual appearance. The nose offers up a combination of red fruit tones, cherry, strawberry and a burnt, smoky raspberry quality, with an undertone of spice and a subtle earth nuance aromatically. Medium bodied this has a sleek, silky texture and an engaging suppleness that will become more fleshy and pronounced with bottle age, backed with some finer grained tannins and an assortment of red fruit flavors that carry over from the nose. With some aeration this really starts to add flesh as well as pick up on its fruit intensity, showing good mid palate weight, vibrancy and persistence on its finish. This is very solid bottle of wine that shows the attractive nature of the varietal at a very attractive price point.
