Sourced from the cooler environs of Elgin, Cathy Marshall’s Pinot Noir is about finesse and restraint and speaks of its origins. Having done wine making stints all around the world, with direct hands on experience in two areas renowned for World Class Pinot Noir, Burgundy and Oregon, Cathy has a working understanding of what it takes to make exceptional expressions of the varietal. With now over ten years of making wine under her own label, the wines that Cathy produces show great since of place with a gentle hand, striving for elegance and lower alcohol. With each passing vintage the ideals of making Pinot Noir that is worthy of international acclaim is now within reach for this gifted female winemaker.
The 2007 Cathy Marshall has a definitive Old World, Burgundian slant with some interesting, earthy funk tones, smoke, char, truffle with a core of red berry, black cherry fruit on the nose. Medium to medium fuller bodied there is a nice mid palate sweetness of dark cherry and then some savory, earthy, smoky tones pushing through on the finish. This plays that intriguing interplay between savory and sweet to perfection. Made in an Old World style, think Burgundy with its savory, earthiness, dark cherry fruit and silky finish, this is still young and evolving and should hit its peak in a year or two and drink beautifully for a couple of years after that.
