Notes
Botalcura is a joint venture between two men with great passion for wine, Chilean businessman Juan Fernando Waidele and French winemaker Philipe Debrus. After a chance meeting in 2000 they began their project and two years later they made their first wine in 2002. Waidele was seduced by the Maule countryside and Debrus desired to return to the hands on winemaking style he had learned as a young winemaker in his native France.
Botalcura, named after the small village and unusual rock formation, from which the village got its name, is around 3 hours south of Santiago. This sight was chosen for the winery due to its pristine environment and ideal climate for growing grapes of superior quality, as well as the simplicity and rugged charm of the village and its residents. Two vineyards, El Delirio and La Porfia which are planted near the village of are the source of the winery’s Reserve and Grand Reserve wines.
The 2007 Botalcura Grand Reserve ‘La Porfia’ Carmenere is distinctly varietal with its nose of wet tobacco, cedar box, earth and loam with notes of dark cherry and dark currant aromatically. On the palate this offers a medium-fuller wine with sweet dark red fruits, that are underpinned with a loam and tobacco component that surface up on the dry finish, which adds a slight rustic tone to the wine. This should be enjoyed over the next few years.
