The very nature of the varietal tells you upfront that yes, it will be tannic. No side shows or obfuscation, just strait forward in the truth of its genetic code. The fruit and the earthiness always playing to the tannins. The key is balance and structure. For $10 bucks this actually has something to offer, it’s got good fruit and structure, but the tannins are firm, so this isn’t something for sitting around the table when the girls are over and having a chat and talking about how was your day, a cocktail wine it isn’t. This has a masculine outlook, not big in terms of alcohol, just rustic in its nature, no nonsense with earth tones and that tannin spine that says this is for meat, slabs of grilled meat, with the fat creating flames and smoke, with a charcoal burned, carbon edge - an homage to the primitive, primordial side of us. Men shooting the breeze, drinking and laughing, even growling, talking about nothing but what men do - sports, cars, how the job sucks, how the old lady is busting his balls and the ways of the world, with big portions of assorted carnage cooked to perfection or even burned for that matter, yet the wine always true to character, cutting through the fat, the char, the BS. True to form it’s real, without mask and made to work in par with the most elemental part of our true primitive beast, the raw elements without pretense. This is Tannat and it is made for the Asado.
