Tasting Notes

5/28/10
This just recently won a gold medal at the Decanter Magazine world wine awards. We look at these reviews and most times take them with a grain of salt; firstly, because very few people even are aware of Decanter (a British publication) and many times when we try some of the wines that receive these glowing reviews, we scratch our heads and wonder what all the hype was about. This point more importantly shows that taste is very subjective, on a cultural as well as a personal level.
So, the verdict on this wine is… Well what caught our attention was the price point, something this inexpensive getting this kind of attention is worthy of looking into. After trying the wine the verdict is quite simple, this may be one of the better under $10 finds that we have tried out there at the moment. Wine being a moving target something else could possibly pop up, but at this price it seems a big feat at that.
Anyway for this point in time we think this is one of those great go to wines that will have mass appeal. A brilliant dark purple and light capturing color captures ones attention right from the first pour. The nose just oozes gobs of sweet black berry, sweet dark plum, a floral, almost violet lift, along with licorice and spice. Medium fuller bodied this has excellent cling and length, powdery tannins that along with the dark fruit coats your palate. The fruit has good purity, offering an engaging plump, juiciness to the mid palate, the tannins countering with a powdery, finer grained grip giving an interesting textural feel. Sweetly fruited, juicy yet dry, this exudes a pedigree that in terms of its price makes it an exceptional bargain. All we can say is come and get it, this should really start to evolve over the next few months and drink beautifully over the next couple of years. A terrific summer wine for the barbeque or just hanging out, it works. Exceptional value.
