Altos de San Isidro Reserve Barbera 2009 beautiful expression of the varietal

November 2011
The 2009 Altos de San Isidro Reserve Barbera is a gorgeous wine, plump, yet possessing sleekness to its texture with gobs of sweeter blackberry, black cherry fruit, smooth tannins and highlighting acidity. The nose jumps out at you with notes of violets, black raspberry, black cherry and blackberry fruit with a spicy top note lifting the aromatics out of the glass. The palate is medium-fuller to fuller bodied, plump and concentrated yet with freshness and vibrancy to the fruit. Layered, elegant and bright toned this has length and depth to the dark cherry and dark berry fruits with finer grained, powdery tannins that gives it a velvety texture on the finish. Pretty hard not to like this; this has engaging fruit and is simply delicious. Even though this will hold up nicely over the next 3-4 years, we doubt if anyone will be able to hold off that long.
