Altivo Chardonnay Viognier Reserva 2009 - delicious stone fruit flavors
Tasting
Notes
Altivo is a fairly new project from an estate dating
back into the 1890’s. Located around 1.5 hours south
of Mendoza city in the Uco Valley, there are 400 hectares under
vine. The vines are planted on land that was purchased by pioneer
viticulturist Eugenio Bustos who owns over 600 hectares in total.
Since this a fairly new project there isn’t much info about the brand.
All we can say is that the wines we have tried
from this label have been impressive.
The 2009 Altivo ‘Reserva’ Chardonnay
Viognier is a blend of 50% Chardonnay
and 50% Viognier, respectively, from a
single vineyard site. For whatever reason,
the combining of these two grape varietals
has a synergy that is magical. Each varietal
is present but neither one dominates which
is a perfect marriage. The aromatic profile
offers notes of fresh apple, pear and riper
more lifted stone fruit, peach tones. The
palate is richly flavored yet nicely balanced
with good acidity adding freshness countering the Viognier’s viscous
nature. This should drink beautifully over the next couple of years.
